What this record does not establish →

Annual inflation in France: two monthly observations 2026-08: 2.6 %. 2026-09: 3.4 %. The difference is +0.8 percentage points, not +0.8 per cent. 2.6% 3.4% 2026-08 2026-09 +0.8 pp
Annual inflation in France was 3.4% in September 2026, against 2.6% the month before — a difference of +0.8 percentage points. Both months are rates already measured in per cent, so the difference between them is counted in percentage points, not per cent: +0.8 percentage points is not +0.8 per cent. These are two observations, not a trend, and nothing joins them.
Why this is measured in percentage points, not per cent

A percentage point is the gap between two rates. Per cent is a gap measured against the starting rate. They are different units and they give different numbers for the same change.

Worked example: a rate moving from 4.0% to 5.0% A rate that moves from 4.0 per cent to 5.0 per cent has risen by 1.0 percentage point, which is the same change expressed as a rise of 25 per cent. Both describe the same movement. 4.0% 5.0% before after the gap
As percentage points
+1.0 pp — five minus four. This is the unit this site uses.
As per cent
+25% — one against a starting rate of four. This site does not publish this figure.

Both sentences describe the same movement. Reading one as the other is the most common mistake made with figures like these, which is why every difference on this site is stated in percentage points and labelled “pp”.

Eurostat reports annual inflation of 3.4% for France in September 2026, measured by the all-items Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP).

That is 0.8 percentage points higher than the 2.6% Eurostat reports for August 2026. Both figures are rates expressed in percent, so the difference between them is measured in percentage points, not in percent.

The annual rate of change compares the index for the month with the index for the same month one year earlier. “All items” means the full HICP basket, not a selected part of it.

This brief reports the figure Eurostat published and its comparison with the preceding month. It does not explain why the figure moved, and it does not attribute the movement to any policy, event or decision.

What this record does not establish

All-items HICP annual inflation on the ECOICOP ver.2 classification, for nine EU reporting areas. Every figure is the one Eurostat published. Two geography labels are shortened so that a headline is readable — Eurostat's own label is shown on the brief itself in every case, and no code or figure is altered. Month-on-month differences are given in percentage points, never in percent, because the figures are already rates. A comparison is omitted entirely whenever Eurostat flags either month as a break in series or a change of definition. Provisional and estimated flags are carried into the wording. No explanation of why a figure moved is offered, and none should be inferred from the ordering of these pages.
